Welcome to Our School

Joseph Gilkes Principal

Joseph Gilkes

The vision for Marshall is to unlock potential by working together to develop an atmosphere of academic excellence and a culture of support, belonging, and growth. We believe each of us has potential for greatness and we are committed to working together to unlock it! As an educator and principal, I am passionate about working with
middle school students because it was in middle school when one of my teachers unlocked my potential that changed the course of
my life.

At Marshall, we are the mariners. A mariner is a person who
navigates or helps with navigating a ship. To be a true mariner, you must get on board. If you are not steering the ship, you should help keep the ship moving in the right direction. We are inviting you to be a true Marshall mariner, by getting on board with the vision of unlocking potential and helping us keep our school moving in the right direction! I look forward to getting to know you and your family and to working together to make Thurgood Marshall a school of academic excellence and where all students belong, achieve, and grow!

School Description

Thurgood Marshall Middle School works to prepare our 5th through 8th graders for high school and beyond. Our teachers collaborate to plan and implement instruction that is best for all of the students in their classrooms. Beyond instruction, we work to develop students socially and emotionally through intramurals, clubs and service projects. Thurgood Marshall Middle School is recognized as a Project Citizen School of Excellence. Through our involvement in this program, which promotes participation in local and state government, we allow our students to link community problem-solving to classroom instruction.

Our curriculum includes a focus on English, science and math, and we offer advanced courses like Algebra I for high-school credit and access to academic clubs such as the Junior National Honor Society. We practice blended learning, meaning students are exposed to both traditional classroom instruction and technology-driven instruction, which helps prepare them for digitally administered courses in high school and beyond. AVID, or Advancement via Individual Determination, is in place to provide extra scholastic support to those students who seek it, while standard tutoring is also offered to all students both during and after the school day. The Encore program is in place to challenge and support our gifted and talented students.

After school, students can explore other interests by participating in extracurricular activities like art, photography, band, cheerleading, dance, BETA Club or even creative writing. All students are given a voice in the clubs and intramurals they attend, which provide opportunities for personal growth outside the classroom. We also offer seven TSSAA-sanctioned sports teams that students can join to show their Mariner pride!

To extend educational support out into our community, we offer English learning classes. We also facilitate monthly school-wide service projects to help charitable organizations in our community.
