Welcome From the Principal

Shawnna Pierce Principal

Shawnna Pierce

Welcome to Paragon Mills Elementary School! My name is Dr. Maria Joie Austria, the new principal at PMES. It is my privilege and honor to join PMES and the Metro Nashville Public Schools and community. I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning and growing with our students and working with our professional staff and you, our parents and community members. I am also excited to share with you my goals, objectives, vision and my very detailed plan of action on how I can make PMES not only a good school, but a great school of excellence!

As principal, it is my mission to motivate, encourage and drive each and every member of our school staff into places of continual excellence as students, educators, parents, community-based partners and lifelong learners.

My educational philosophy is the belief that ALL students can learn and achieve at high levels, no matter what background they came from. As educators we must be willing to do whatever it takes to ensure this happens. My goal is to make PMES the model school for the state. In order to move to the next level, we must build upon our strengths and face our challenges head-on as outlined in my “First 100 Days Plan”. This complex task cannot be accomplished by any one person; it will require strong commitments from our students, staff, administration, parents and community members. Our success is dependent upon our ability to work as a team and plan, implement and execute our shared vision.

As we begin our journey in the days ahead, please know that I desire your input as we move towards becoming a top elementary school. Together we can and will rise to the top because of our commitment to join forces as a united school community, declaring that the students of PMES receive the best educational experience possible and become college- and career ready with the necessary 21st-century skills to compete globally.

School Description

Paragon Mills Elementary is a school that represents a unique blend of cultures. Students come from more than 40 countries and speak over 20 languages. This diversity creates a learning community that provides for an interactive exchange of ideas between students, teachers and parents.

Our teachers and staff work collaboratively to provide experiences that enable students to become successful learners. In terms of academic support, we offer tutoring, as well as Encore for gifted and talented students.

As a Title I school, Paragon Mills goes above and beyond to support the students and families of our community. Monthly parent involvement opportunities and meetings help families learn more about the education of their children.
