Welcome From the Principal

Dr. Tonja Williams Principal

Dr. Tonja Williams

Welcome to Head Middle Magnet School. We’re recognized as a top-performing school in Tennessee; in 2013 and 2014, we were designated a Tennessee Reward School. Our magnet focus is in Math and Science, yet we’re a comprehensive learning community that prepares students with a foundation of knowledge, skills and character necessary to excel in higher education, work and life.

We achieve greatness by helping our students master the demands of a challenging curriculum while simultaneously creating a nurturing learning environment where inquiry, innovation and problem-solving are encouraged. Our students should expect plenty of homework and projects, along with tons of fun, laughter and memorable moments!

School Description

Head Middle Magnet School is a Math and Science-themed magnet school. All of our students are on a direct pathway to Martin Luther King Jr. High School, one of the best high schools in the district and a magnet high school for health sciences and engineering. Our students get a rigorous, challenging academic experience while also having the opportunity to expand their social and emotional growth within a safe, nurturing environment.

We are a structured, well-run and still very caring school. Tiger Transitions helps orient and prepare our incoming fifth-graders for what’s to come. Every day, students study core classes, including Integrated Math, Physical Science and one hour of related arts such as PE, art or music. Strings, Band and choral music are all available at Head Magnet. Our advanced academic programs include Encore, which supports our gifted students. Our 8th-graders can earn high-school credit in several classes like Honors Algebra I, Physical Science, Spanish and Latin.

During a typical school day, students may enjoy field trips, assemblies, pep rallies and club meetings. Math Clubs, Book Club, Chess Club, Art Club, Robotics, VSVS (Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science), and a variety of sports teams meet following the school day. Many teachers also offer after-school tutoring.

Between our academic requirements and other activities, there’s no shortage of activity or energy at Head Middle. During the course of our school year, there are dances, a Fall Festival, and concerts after school.
