Welcome From the Principal

Dr. LarCulia Woods

Welcome to the Home of the Gladiators! It is with excitement and joy that I join the great legacy of the Gra-Mar Gladiators. I consider it an honor and privilege to serve as the leader for your child’s educational journey in middle school. I’m extremely honored to lead an outstanding faculty, grateful to have supportive parents and privileged to be around remarkable students.  Being an educator has been my passion since I was 9 years old. In fact, my parents were educators and athletic coaches in the Madison County School system in Jackson, Tennessee. I believe in the relentless possibility of children, and, as educators, we do whatever it takes to ensure that our students become successful young people who persevere and continue to follow their dreams. We are committed to our students, community, and stakeholders and we plan to ensure that the Gra-Mar Gladiators are prepared to be productive citizen that lead our community with integrity and respect.

I look forward to Growing in Greatness at Gra-Mar because you can't hide that Gladiator Pride! Let’s work together to make Gra-Mar Middle School the first choice for our great East Nashville community!

School Description

Gra-Mar Middle School serves grades 5-8, and is part of the Maplewood High School cluster. Our vision is to encourage a community where learning and teaching are exciting and students are performing at or above grade level in all academic areas.

We have high expectations for our students, and therefore have the programs in place to help them meet those expectations. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a program to help students get the attention they need to go to a four-year university. Encore is a program that supports our gifted students, providing them with additional classes to challenge them.

There are plenty of extracurricular opportunities at Gra-Mar, including seven TSSAA-sanctioned sports. Other programs include Choir, Garden Club, Book Club, Dance Club, Etiquette Club, Cosmetology and Spelling, to name a few. Our Art and Band programs are our most well known. Our students’ works are displayed annually at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and Tennessee State University, while our band students enjoy playing a mix of traditional favorites as well as popular Top 40 hits.

We actively support our community here at Gra-Mar, both inside and outside our school. We provide a Family Resource Center, Food Bank and parent training classes to help those in our surrounding neighborhood benefit from the opportunities our school creates.
